Lazarillo de Tormes was a child raised by experiences not by parenting. It was these experiences that taught him to be resourceful to survive. The result of these resources shaped the course of his life. Even his name was given to him from an experience resulting from his birth nearby a river. Originally published in , The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes is the anonymously written Spanish novella often credited as the first example of a picaresque novel. Set in Spain during the 16th century, the story follows a poor young boy named Lazaro de Tormes and his episodic rite of passage in assuming his father’s thieving ways.

The novel is written from the perspective of Lazaro de Tormes, a town crier in the city of Toledo, telling his life story to an unknown superior in the form of a letter. Lazarillo de Tormes, or The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes and of His Fortunes and Adversities, is a Spanish novella, first published in simultaneously in three cities in Spain and Belgium.

In the first chapter, the narrator presents himself as Lazaro de Tormes, a boy born in a poor family and forced to live without a father when his father was exiled for being caught stealing from the mill.

His father then dies shortly after in a war started by the Church against a group of African Muslims called the Moors.
